Oklahoma Institute for Learning Styles (OIL)

The Oklahoma Institute for Learning Styles (OIL) and the College of Education (COE) Center for Excellence (CFE) at Northeastern State University are combining forces to continue the enhancement of academic achievement of Oklahoma children and other students. Teaching is a complicated art, built upon an exacting science and practiced in an ever-more complicated and chaotic society. It is the mission of the Oklahoma Institute for Learning Styles (OIL) to help teachers teach and learners learn. To accomplish this mission, the OIL staff examines and conducts research, provides training, and tests learners to determine individual learning styles.

Research

Research in learning styles is not limited to learning in K-12 settings. Research on applications exists in many areas, including cultural diversity, counseling, manufacturing, colleges, senior citizens, physician and nurses. Studies are underway dealing with such diverse issues as violence and bigotry.

Services

There will be an expansion of services offered by the Oklahoma Institute for Learning Styles (OIL). To date, we have provided testing, teacher, student and parent training and consultation to 62 school districts and 202 different schools.  In addition to school districts, we have also aided in learning styles appreciation with the Cherokee County Health Department Child Counseling Center, the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, the Sequoyah County Health Department and the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

We are very excited about the opportunities that OIL can provide for Northeastern State University and about the impact it can have on education in Oklahoma. In addition to seminars and training workshops, we provide individual learning style testing, prescriptions and counseling. For more information about learning styles, please contact our offices at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
