Dr. Vassar's early academic career focused in American Literature, with a special focus in Native American Literature, especially Native Drama. His dissertation focused on the theatrical work of Kiowa playwright Hanay Geiogamah and was one of the first full-length critical biographies of a Native American playwright. In more recent years, as an Americanist-turned-generalist now teaching classes as disparate as Philosophy, Religion, and Global Humanities, he has turned his attention more towards Cultural Studies.
Deeply interested in global cultures, Dr. Vassar wrote the grant to bring NSU's first Fulbright Scholar through the Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program "Direct Access to the Muslim World." Dr. Vassar has also been a Visiting Foreign Scholar at Southwest University of Science and Technology in Mianyang, Sichuan Province, China, where he taught classes of English, Writing, and Teacher’s Training.
