Suzanne Scholand Dovel joined the NSU music faculty in 2011. Prior to her appointment at NSU, she was an elementary music specialist in Oklahoma, middle school choir teacher in Virginia, and high school choir director in Texas. She also held a two-year graduate teaching assistantship at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where she taught Music in the Elementary Classroom and assisted with the choral program.
As a soprano and flautist, Dovel has performed in the Netherlands, England, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, and throughout the United States. She has sung with the Chautauqua Chamber Singers, Virginia Consort, Denton Bach Society, and the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus. She studied voice with Daniel Ihasz and Myra Merritt and conducting with Mark Munson, William Skoog, Jerry Blackstone, and Donald Lang.
She earned a Bachelor of Music in music education from the State University of New York College at Fredonia and a Master of Music in choral conducting from Bowling Green State University. She has pursued additional studies at the University of Michigan and the Quartz Mountain Arts Institute, and served as an apprentice with the Chautauqua Children’s Chorale in New York.
