Optometrists in Continuing Education Class at NSUOCO.

Welcome to NSUOCO

Few decisions in life have greater impact than choosing where and how to pursue your educational goals. The Northeastern State University Oklahoma's College of Optometry (NSUOCO) is recognized as one of the nation's leading institutions in the education of optometric physicians. Progressive development of courses in basic and clinical sciences continues to provide the foundation for our students to attain quality education in primary eye care for the practice of optometry.

The premier clinical education of our program provides extensive hands-on experience in patient care. The partnership with the Cherokee Nation provides state-of-the-art eye core to this under served population. In preparing our graduates to meet the vision care needs of the future, NSUOCO is recognized for educating students to the highest levels of new technology, including laser procedures.

Setting the standard of excellence in education is our goal, but NSU combines the richness of tradition with up-to-date technology. Founded in 1846 as the Cherokee National Female Seminary, the institution was designated Northeastern State Normal School by the Oklahoma state legislature in 1909. During the past 94 years, Northeastern has continued to grow in number of students, physical facility, scope of programs available, and quality of faculty and staff. The 200-acre campus began with stately Seminary Hall as its centerpiece, and has expanded over the years. The Optometry school is located in the original Bureau of Indian Affairs Hospital built in 1936.

One of the newest additions to campus is the expansion to the academic wing of the Optometry Building, which provides students and faculty with two classrooms and a Conference Center which seats 125. This building addition is a work of modern architecture featuring state-of-the-art classrooms and labs that provide access to local and global network resources.

Northeastern has successfully met the challenge of providing excellence, in optometric education by combining the highest quality faculty with the recruitment of highly qualified students. NSU faculty and staff are dedicated to student achievement and success, from the process of applying for admission to the thrill of graduation day. Our commitment goes even further, by providing post-graduate education through residency training and continuing optometric education. In addition, the NSU Oklahoma College of Optometry serves the optometric profession and the public as a clinical referral center.

The beautiful campus is located in an area of northeastern Oklahoma noted for its cultural and historical attractions, Clearly, NSU and the College of Optometry thrive in an exhilarating atmosphere of beauty, friendship, and vast opportunities for development. We hope that you will choose to join the NSUOCO family and share in the pride of a career in optometry.
