Since the foundation of JFJO in Tulsa in 1994, the band has brought their impressionistic and improvisational vision of jazz to many of the world's finest music festivals and venues. The band is known for their creativity, musical risks and is acknowledged as one of the foremost contemporary jazz bands in the world. In early 2011, JFJO recorded and debuted a seven-part piece titled 'Race Riot Suite' inspired by the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. The piece is receiving rave reviews nationwide.
