Child Welfare Traineeship Specialization Program

    Beginning its first cohort in the Fall 2010 semester, the NSU Social Work Department proudly announces an exciting educational opportunity for students who are interested in working with children and families.

     The funding for this pilot program is provided by the Children’s Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, US Department of Health and Human Services and is designed to provide a significant stipend for social work students pursuing a career in child welfare for tribes, counties, and private agencies that contract child welfare services. The funding is also designed to enable social work programs to strengthen and transform curriculums in child welfare. NSU Bachelor of Social Work students who participate in the program will graduate with a child welfare specialization.

 

Number of Traineeships: 8 per year; new slots open as students graduate.

 

Target Student Classification: First semester entering juniors; second semester juniors, and entering first semester seniors can apply.

 

Application Deadline: June 1 of each year.

 

Student Stipend(s): Fall $3,300.00; Spring $3,300.00 and Summer $1,650.00

 

Travel Stipend: $1,125.00 annually per student to assist in practicum travel and to attend a professional conference.

 

Advisement: Students in the traineeship program as well as other social work students interested in Child Welfare will take eleven hours of child welfare electives resulting in a child welfare specialization. A letter from the department acknowledging the specialization will presented to the student upon their graduation.

 

Practicum: Students will participate in practicum settings with B.S.W. or M.S.W. field supervision in the following child welfare agencies: tribal, county, or the following state contracted private agency child welfare services: CHBS (Community Home Based Services), therapeutic foster care or group homes.

 

Payback: Graduates will be required to obtain employment in tribal, county, or state contracted private agencies equivalent to each year in which they were stipend recipients.
