Masters of Science in Library Media and Information Technology

The Library Media & Information Technology Program is accredited by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and prepares individuals to be effective school librarians in the areas of teaching and learning, information access, and program administration. We focus on theoretical and practical knowledge of schools, learners and best practices. We have two options: the master's degree in Library Media & Information Technology is a 33 hour program for degree seeking candidates. The certification option is a 23 hour program for candidates who currently have a master's degree.

Program Goals

The library media and information technology program endorses the American Association of School Librarians' Standards for the 21st Century Learner

The library media program supports candidates to be effective leaders in three major areas:

  1. Learning and teaching
  2. Information access
  3. Program administration

The library media program at NSU prepares individuals to be successful school librarians, and equips them with both theoretical and practical knowledge of schools, learners, and best practices.

School librarians are effective teachers, who design and implement instruction to help students inquire and think critically, as they gain and share knowledge. They promote reading for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. School librarians model and promote ethical and equitable access to and use of information. In their communities, school librarians advocate for strong school library programs that focus on student learning and student achievement. Within the school community, the school librarian plans and directs a program that adheres to the best practices in librarianship, education, management, and administration. These skills are in accordance with the NCATE standards for the preparation of school librarians.
