Gather Here. Go Far

NSU is where success begins. Here professors know their subjects and how to get you ready for a career after you graduate. We empower individuals to become socially responsible global citizens by creating and sustaining a culture of learning and discovery.

Indigenous History and Literacy Project

The Indigenous History and Literacy Project offers professional development in social studies pedagogy to 4-12 grade educators interested in building active learning history lessons, improving reading comprehension, and developing resources that speak to the Native identities of their students and region. With the assistance of an interdisciplinary working group from Northeastern State University, the IHLP has developed and delivered learning resources and workshops for teachers and students from across northeastern Oklahoma.

Teaching resources integrate the use of historical thinking skills to examine historical documents. Recent modules include lessons based around the experience of Indigenous students at Indian Boarding Schools and the intersection between Cherokee nationalism and American national identity.

For more information about scheduling a workshop or accessing teaching resources, contact Dr. Iain Anderson, Professor of History, at andersoi@nsuok.edu.
