Master of Education in Reading
The purpose of the Master of Education in Reading is to facilitate classroom teachers in-depth understanding of the reading process and their knowledge of how children learn to read and write. The major emphasis is on effective instruction, curriculum development and assessment within an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Teaching, Early Childhood and Special Education. The program is designed to meet all of the International Literacy Association's (ILA) competencies for classroom teachers, reading teachers, reading consultants and reading supervisors. Students may elect to take the state certification test for Reading Specialists upon completion of their master's degree.

- Specialized Reading - 21 hours - Required courses in specialization
- Enrichment - 3 hours - Select from courses linking Reading with Early Childhood and Special Education
- Capstone - 3 hours - The course READ 5563 meets the capstone requirement
The program meets all of the International Literacy Association's (ILA) competencies for classroom teachers, reading teachers and reading specialists. Students may elect to take the state certification test upon completion of the program.

Curriculum & Instruction
Beyond the admission requirements for the Graduate College, admission to the Reading program requires:
- A 2.5 overall GPA or 2.75 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework, or a scaled score above the 25th percentile on the GRE or MAT prior to the first enrollment;
- Completion of a minimum of 12 semester hours of education and/or psychology in order to take course in professional education for graduate credit;
- Qualified for a standard Oklahoma teacher’s certificate/license;
- Reading courses to include methods of instruction and materials in reading;
- Methods of teaching elementary language arts or literature for children and/or adolescents.
Northeastern State University offers initial teacher licensure programs at the traditional undergraduate level for graduates wishing to teach in Oklahoma. We also offer advanced licensure programs and programs for other school professionals at the graduate level. We do not guarantee to meet the licensure requirements of other states. You will be responsible for verifying that your program of study meets your desired state's licensure requirements.
