Drama Program

NSU DRAMA RECEIVES KENNEDY CENTER AMERICAN COLLEGE THEATER FESTIVAL HONORS

The NSU Drama program recently received a variety of accolades from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. The program entered the Fall 2023 production of Fuddy Meers as a participating entry for Region VI KC/ACTF. After two representatives attend a performance and provided an oral response to the production, the program was notified that the overall production is being held in contention to possibly be invited to perform at the Regional KC/ACTF event in February 2024. Students in the program were also awarded honors in the following areas:

Irene Ryan Acting Competition Nominees: Gillian Randall, Hunter Sunday, and Seth Griffin

Stage Management Excellence: Erin Corley

Scenic Design Excellence: Sidney Robinson

Costume Design Excellence: Mishael Bynum

Makeup Design Excellence: Alex Smallwood

Props Master Excellence: Gillian Randall

Excellence in Ensemble Performance: the cast of Fuddy Meers

NSU Drama is the hub of theatrical activity on the Tahlequah campus. The program offers theatrical performances and a variety of courses in performance, theory, technical theatre, and film, in addition to providing theatrical resources and support for activities such as the Miss Northeastern State University pageant and the Sequoyah Institute's Performing Arts series. NSU Drama also provides professional performing and technical theatre opportunities with the River City Players Branson-style summer music productions and presents screenings of National Theatre Live professional productions throughout the year.

Mission Statement:
The drama program embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northeastern State University, with particular focus on collaboration, creativity and leadership. Through intense study of human interaction and practical experience in the realization of all aspects of collaborative production, students graduating from the program are theatre generalists well prepared to engage in a global society. The following are educational goals and objectives of the program:

  1. To provide a quality drama degree program that prepares the major for entry to the professional world or graduate study at a top level university;
  2. To provide a generalist degree program that emphasizes study of the entire theatre discipline;
  3. To produce educated, culturally sensitive graduates with strong liberal arts experiences who can become valuable citizens in their community of choice;
  4. To produce regularly scheduled theatrical performances that provide learning experiences for drama majors and minors as well as cultural experiences for the campus at large and the Tahlequah community;
  5. To serve as a resource center for theatre in northeast Oklahoma;
  6. To serve as a hub for all NSU performing arts programming.

SPRING 2024 EVENTS

We are excited to announce our Spring 2024 productions!

In February 2024 we will be producing an original play written and directed by faculty member Christopher Miller titled The Cassandra Code. The production dates are February 14-17 at 7:30pm. 

In April 2024 we will be presenting a production of Five Women Wearing the Same Dress, directed by Dr. Robyn Pursley. The play explores the relationships of 5 women who seeming have little in common yet have been dubbed bridesmaids for a mutual friend. Over the course of the day they spend together they discover that they may have more in common that they could have ever imagined. Production dates are April 10-13 at 7:30pm. 

To close out our season, we will be presenting the North by Northeastern Festival of Film, Theatre, and Dance on April 30-May 2, 2024. The week will showcase a variety of student-driven work in all three areas of performing arts.
