Literature

Reader's Theater: Reader's Theater uses the mind to portray the action of a story rather than props or movement. The book is conveyed through the script which is taken directly from the book. The pages used for the script must encourage prospective readers to read the book by presenting interesting or thought-provoking subject matter from the book. The narrator introduces the author and title as well as the characters and the scene to be portrayed. Following the dialogue by the characters, the narrator gives a conclusion to further entice listeners to read the book and restates the author and title.

Poetry: is a way of writing or speaking that usually has a rhythmic pattern and is organized into lines. It is chosen and arranged to create a certain emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm. Poetry communicates through the way the words sound and the way the poem looks on the page. Poetry is often an imaginative awareness of experience and often speaks directly to the readers emotions.

Poetry, when used creatively, is a classroom strategy that can generate an enjoyable, risk-free environment that offers students an opportunity to be exposed to, practice, use, and learn content vocabulary that is above their independent reading level. Another strategy is to use poetry to teach reading. Part of teaching reading is motivating the children to practice; using children's poetry is one way to do this. Although students will receive much of their poetry education in English class, teachers of other subjects can poetry to add rhythm and imagery to almost any lesson.

A collection of poems is the first step to bringing a human element and a personal, often humorous touch to the topics you are studying. This helps students retain information and vocabulary providing vivid and humorous mental images that create stronger connections for remembering details. Poems are short, concise and can connect students to a content topic in powerful and memorable ways.

Much American Indian literature is rooted in the vitality of the oral tradition of storytelling. Many novels or poems may incorporate storytelling techniques such as song or repetition. American Indian poetry especially shares many of these characteristics and may even be written for performances and involve instruments and refrains.
