Oklahoma Elementary Mathematics Specialist Certificate Program
NSU is pleased to offer graduate courses necessary to complete requirements for the Oklahoma Elementary Mathematics Specialist. All eighteen hours of OEMS graduate courses may be applied toward the M.Ed. Mathematics Education degree should an OEMS candidate wish to pursue both credentials. The OEMS certificate is administered through the Gregg Wadley College of Science and Health Professions.
The certification process, prerequisites and requirements were approved by the Oklahoma State Department of Education during its Feb. 23, 2012 board meeting. The NSU-OEMS program has received recognition from the office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA). Northeastern State University began offering graduate courses approved for OEMS in Fall 2012. These courses include:
MATH 5023: Number Systems
MATH 5233: Data Analysis and Probability
MATH 5273: Geometry and Measurement
MATH 5323: Algebra and Functions
MATH 5523: Mathematical Pedagogy
EDUC 5943: Internship-Mathematics Supervision
OEMS Certification Prerequisites and Requirements as determined by the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, and the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation:
1. Hold a valid teacher certification in elementary education and/or early childhood
education.
2. Have two years of full-time teaching experience in grades PK-5 at an accredited
school under a valid state-issued teacher credential.
3. Complete eighteen hours of graduate OEMS coursework. (Note: At NSU, all 18 hours
will also apply towards the M. Ed. Mathematics Education degree.]
4. Receive a passing score on the OEMS certification examination.
Graduate courses are offered on a rotating basis on the Broken Arrow and Tahlequah campuses.
