LP Woods Lecture

L.P. Woods 2023 Endowed Mathematics Lecture by Dr. Jim Coykendall

LP Woods Lecture snapshot of the lecture

The L.P. Woods Endowed Lectureship for Mathematics was created in 1999 by the late Dr. L.P. Woods, Jr., and his wife, Ann, in memory of L.P. Woods, Sr., who taught at NSU from 1921 to 1957. He was chair and professor of mathematics, dean of men, and in 1931 he founded the alpha chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, an honorary mathematics fraternity that is now nationwide in scope. He also sponsored the NSU Student Council for many years.

The L.P. Woods Endowed Lectureship for Mathematics brings renowned experts and lecturers to NSU to benefit students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other community members.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science hosted the L. P. Woods Endowed Lecture for Mathematics on Wednesday, April 12th in Tahlequah.   Dr. Jim Coykendall from Clemson University presented “How Big is Big:  Surprising Perspectives on Large Numbers.”  A reception hosted by the NSU Foundation began at 3:30 and the lecture followed at 4:00.  Both events were well attended by students, faculty, alumni and many other NSU representatives.
