Frequently Asked Questions

Individuals earn certification by successfully completing two courses,

  • The first course, LMS training, covers the "How To's" of using Blackboard through a series of technical tutorials followed by objectively scored quizzes. To complete, all module quizzes must be completed with a score of 85% or better.
  • The second course, Course Design and Development Training, covers the Best Practices in online teaching and learning through Blackboard. To complete this course, all learning activities must be completed at an 85% or better score. Quality Matters Designing Your Online Course (DYOC) or Improving Your Online Course (IYOC) may be taken in place of the Course Design and Development Training.

These courses are required for anyone who teaches any online, blended, or HyFlex courses at NSU, and recommended for anyone who teaches at NSU or manages an organization in Blackboard. 

All faculty who teach online or blended courses must complete NSU's Online Educator Certification. 

The Policies section of the Online Educator Policies & Procedures (para. A & B, Part II) outlines the Exceptions and Waivers provided for exceptional cases. 

  1. "Exceptions. In exceptional cases, such as last-minute faculty changes or assignments, department chairs may request an exception from the Provost’s office to assign faculty without an LMS Training certificate. These individuals must complete the LMS Training certification within 30 days of the exception approval. Additionally, if significant LMS updates occur, certified faculty must repeat the LMS Training to comply with this policy. The Provost's office is responsible for reviewing and approving all exception requests.
  2. Waiver. This requirement may be waived upon verification of the completion of comparable LMS training within the previous three (3) years. Documentation demonstrating the successful completion of a comparable LMS course should be submitted to the Provost’s office."

To register for the first course, LMS Training, please fill out the Workshop and Event Registration form and select "LMS Training". You will receive a welcome email upon enrollment.

To register for the second course, Course Design and Development Training, DYOC or IYOC, please go to the Workshop and Event Registration form and select your desired secondary course from the available dates list. If there are no available dates listed for your desired course, please contact NSU Online at 918-444-5855 or nsuonline@nsuok.edu for future session dates.
