Tree Campus Committee
Sister Committee to the Committee for Sustainability
Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges, universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship, by encouraging its students to plant trees and participate in services that will help the environment. Tree Campus USA is a partnership of the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota.
Recognition criteria requires five core standards for institutions seeking consideration:
- Campus Tree Advisory Committee - comprised of members representing a diverse audience of those with a stake in campus trees, and meets regularly.
- Campus Tree Care Plan - is flexible enough to fit the needs and circumstances of your particular campus. It should be goal oriented and provide the opportunity to set good policy for three care and management, and clear guidance for planting, maintaining, and removing trees. It also provides education to the campus community, citizens, contractors, and consultants about the importance of the campus forest and the protection and maintenance of trees as part of the growth and land development process.
- Campus Tree Program with Dedicated Annual Expenditures - Campuses must allocate finances for its annual campus tree program. Evidence is provided that an annual work plan has been established and expenditures dedicated towards that work plan.
- Arbor Day Observance - provides and excellent opportunity to educate the campus community to the benefits of the trees on their campus property and in the community.
- Service Learning Project - completed within the course of the year, this project is an outreach of the spirit of the Tree Campus USA initiative. This project provides and opportunity to engage the student population with projects related to trees and can be part of a campus community initiative.
