Womens Studies

Welcome to the Center for Women’s Studies website. Housed in historic Seminary Hall, the Center for Women’s Studies honors NSU’s heritage as the location of the former Cherokee National Female Seminary and the legacy of Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation. Founded in 2013, the Center for Women’s Studies supports many of Northeastern State University’s core values and goals through both an academic minor and programming that promotes an environment of learning and discovery, full inclusion, civic engagement, and it also encourages global knowledge and cultural sensitivity.

In Oklahoma and nation-wide, women make up more the fifty percent of the population. More than sixty percent of the student body at NSU is female. For this reason, global and local issues have a direct impact on our university students. Therefore, in addition to an academic minor, the Center for Women’s Studies seeks to become a hub of advocacy at NSU and in Green Country for women’s issues.  Armed with an education and a passion for social advocacy, it is our hope that our students will truly be able to “go far” in advancing the position of women in Oklahoma, nationwide, and globally.
