American Indian Studies B.A.
The Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies is designed for all persons interested in the cultural heritage and history of American Indian peoples. The major is a multi-disciplinary liberal arts program with required courses in anthropology, history, literature, and political science or criminal justice. Electives can be chosen from a broad choice of subjects which focus on Native Americans and their experiences as well as their influences within society.
American Indian Studies majors must also select a minor or a second major. Suggested minors include: Anthropology, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Health Care Administration, History, Hospitality and Tourism Management, Legal Studies, Sociology, and Social Welfare. A student may want to consider selecting a second major in one of the above areas, or combining American Indian Studies with another appropriate major.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Learn about American Indian contributions to the world and today’s global society.
- Learn about indigenous perspective through the study of American Indian expressive culture, oral traditions, and religious beliefs.
- Learn about the cultural diversity of Native Americans, focusing on subsistence patterns, kinship, and belief systems.
- Learn about archaeological methods and fields techniques necessary for the interpretation of prehistory and the relationship between archaeologists and American Indians.
- Learn about the prehistory and accomplishments of Native Americans.
- Learn about past and present issues affecting tribal sovereignty and well-being. (Sovereignty, Health and Current Wellness option)
General Education Requirements
A minimum of 46 hours of academic work in general education is required during the freshman and sophomore years. For students transferring with the Associate of Arts degree or Associate of Science degree from a public institution in Oklahoma, all general education requirements will be satisfied with respect to degree requirements. However, some majors may require other specific general education courses as program prerequisites or program requirements. Students should consult advisors and the program’s plan of study for further information.
