Leadership in Corrections

Course Description

Greetings and welcome to the Leadership in Corrections course! The purpose of this program is to explore the critical role that leadership plays within correctional agencies. You’ll learn how to enhance your leadership skills, empower your team, and drive positive outcomes whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting your career in corrections.

The importance of leadership development in corrections

From managing inmate populations to maintaining staff safety and order, correctional facilities face unique challenges. Leadership is essential to addressing these complexities and driving meaningful change. Visionary leaders believe:
  1. Leadership development is a continuous process that requires commitment and effort. Developing the skills and mindset necessary to lead effectively is more than just about titles.
  2. Alignment with Agency Needs: Our programs align with agency operational and strategic goals. We recognize that effective leadership positively impacts correctional practices and outcomes.

Our Approach

We developed the Correctional Leadership Course using materials and standards from the National Institute of Corrections (NIC). To be a successful leader in corrections, you must possess key traits, skills, and knowledge. Different leadership profiles are catered to in our programs:
  1. Supervisory Skills for First Line Supervisors
  2. Management Development for the Future (MDF) Series for Mid-Level Managers
  3. Correctional Leadership Development (CLD) Series for Senior Level Leaders
  4. Executive Excellence Leadership: Executives

Instructor Information

Dr. Stacey White

Dr. Stacey White, is a 31 year veteran of law enforcement, 21 years as a Chief of Police, previously serving as the Chief in Blanchard, Oklahoma. He has a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice (Summa Cum Laude), M.S. In Public Service Leadership and is a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. Dr. White has taught for NSU since April of 2014, and currently is the Coordinator of the Cybersecurity program at NSU. As well as being a certified advanced instructor with the Oklahoma Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, where he has written numerous course outlines for basic, intermediate and advanced law enforcement courses. Dr. White served with the Curriculum Review Board for two years. He also served as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Marines from 1985-1991, three of those years as an instructor at MCCDC, Quantico.
