Certificate Vs Degree Seeking Pathways
The RiverHawks Scholar Program offers two distinct postsecondary pathways designed to meet students where they are and support their individual goals: the Certificate and the Degree Seeking Pathway. Both pathways provide students with a fully inclusive college experience at Northeastern State University while offering individualized support across RSP’s four pillars: Academics, Career Readiness, Social Skills, and Independent Living. Whether a student’s goal is to earn a college degree or build career and life skills through a certificate program, RSP works closely with students and families to determine the pathway that best aligns with their academic readiness, learning needs, and long-term aspirations.

Meet Jordan – A Certificate Pathway Student
Jordan graduated from high school with a diploma and is excited to continue learning in a college environment. In high school, Jordan had a documented intellectual disability, received special education services through an IEP, and benefited from academic modifications and hands-on instruction.
Jordan loves working with children and hopes to pursue a career in childcare or another community-based job. While Jordan values the college experience, earning a traditional college degree is not necessary to achieve their personal and professional goals.
Through the RiverHawks Scholar Program, Jordan enrolls in the Certificate Pathway, which emphasizes career readiness, independent living, and social development. Jordan participates fully in campus life, lives in the residence halls with support, learns budgeting and daily living skills, and completes internships at a local daycare center.
Jordan’s family chose the Certificate Pathway because it aligns with Jordan’s strengths, learning style, and long-term goals.
Pathway Outcome: RSP Certificate + entry-level employment in childcare + increased independence
Meet Daniel – A Degree Pathway Student
Daniel excelled in high school math and technology courses and has a strong interest in computer science. He meets Northeastern State University’s admission standards and plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science with the goal of becoming a software developer.
As a Degree Pathway student in the RiverHawks Scholar Program, Daniel enrolls as a degree-seeking NSU student while receiving individualized support through RSP. Peer mentors help him balance academic responsibilities and campus life, and education coaches support his success in coursework. Daniel also completes a paid internship with NSU’s Information Technology department, gaining hands-on experience in his field.
Outside of the classroom, Daniel enjoys gaming with friends and is an active member of NSU’s eSports team, building friendships and social confidence through shared interests.
Pathway Outcome: Bachelor’s degree in computer science + RSP Certificate + career entry in technology
