About the Artists
New York based tenor saxophonist/composer Seamus Blake is recognized as one of the finest exponents of contemporary jazz. His music is known for its sophistication, bold improvisations and "sheer swagger". Seamus Blake's recent releases, Live at Smalls (Smalls Live 2010), Bellwether (Criss Cross Jazz 2009) and Live in Italy (Jazz Eyes 2009), have garnered considerable critical praise for his masterful playing, his fine compositional skills, and for his facility as a leader. Dr. Tommy Poole has recorded as saxophonist on numerous commercially available CD's ranging in style from classical, to jazz, to pop. He has performed with Joe Williams, Mercer Ellington, Ramsey Lewis, The Woody Herman Orchestra under the direction of Frank Tiberi, Diane Schuur, and Diane Reeves. He has composed and arranged works for a variety of settings. His arrangements have been featured on at least six commercially available CD's and are regularly performed world-wide. He was named 2010 Oklahoma Collegiate Jazz Educator of the Year by the Oklahoma Jazz Educators Association.
The NSU Jazz Ensemble is the flagship ensemble of the NSU Jazz Studies Program at Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, OK. The band has recently performed with Geoffrey Keezer, John Riley, Kevin Mahogany, Conrad Herwig, Kenny Werner, Terell Stafford, John Fedchock, and Chris Potter, among many others. NSU is the only higher education institution in Oklahoma to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies. The NSU Jazz Lab, a unique state-of-the-art performance and recording facility, is the home for the NSU Jazz Studies Program. NSU hosts the Green Country Jazz Festival, which, in its 46th year, is the longest-running jazz festival in the state. NSU Jazz has previously released five critically acclaimed CD s; On Cue is the band's sixth CD.
