About the Mechanical Engineering Program

Mechanical engineering is the study of objects and systems in motion. It is one of the most diverse and versatile engineering fields and touches virtually every aspect of modern life. Mechanical engineers take products from the idea stage to the marketplace.

Mechanical engineers research, design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal sensors and devices, including tools, engines, and machines. Mechanical engineering deals with the design, development, installation, operation, and maintenance of anything that has moving parts. Mechanical engineers work in a wide range of sectors, including:

  • aerospace engineering
  • automotive engineering
  • construction
  • energy
  • manufacturing
  • medicine

The mission of the mechanical engineering program is to provide quality undergraduate education in engineering principles, emphasizing critical and analytical thinking skills, to our diverse community of students. The program objectives call for students to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs, demonstrate skills required for communicating to all audiences, and to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities which ties to the mission statement of the university where students are prepared to achieve professional and personal success in a multicultural and global society. This program specifically provides a high-quality curriculum that is relevant to the needs of our state for supporting the needs for engineers in the state. The curriculum provides experiential learning opportunities throughout the program but especially through the Engineering Design I, Engineering Design II, and Design Practicum courses.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the mechanical engineering program, students will be able to:

  • identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • demonstrate skills required for communicating and working with natural scientists, engineers, social scientists, managers, business leaders, policy makers, and the general public.
  • recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgements.
  • function effectively on a team whose members create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • be proficient in using computer-aided design concepts.
  • acquire and apply new knowledge as needed.
