Molecular Biology along with its sub-discipline of biotechnology is considered to be at the cutting edge of science. Molecular Biology is the science of combining biology with advanced knowledge in cellular and DNA technology. This allows for a deep understanding of the structure and function of genes and gene products within a cell, as well as, the creation of genetically modified organisms. This program will also allow the students to get a deeper understanding of diseases at a molecular level. The knowledge and skills gained by this discipline is used for enhancing food production, advancing the field of medicine, and creating novel techniques for the efficient production of other commodities related to the blossoming biotechnology, health, animal and research genres.
This major will integrate best practices of 21st century biology education by promoting exposure to current research literature and hands-on experience with modern instrumentation and molecular research methods. The Biology-Molecular Emphasis degree program provides the necessary tools to enhance the skills needed for molecular biology and biotechnology related careers. This emphasis is ideal for students who which to pursue graduate school (molecular biology, biomedicine, and forensics) or professional school (medicine, optometry, dentistry, veterinary medicine and allied health fields) as well as students who which to seek employment upon graduation in research laboratories.
