Nursing Academics
RN to BSN Program
Northeastern State University offers an online RN to BSN program that can be completed in as few as 10 months. The curriculum for this accredited online nursing program consists of 30 upper division credit hours and is designed to build on your previous education and experience and prepare you for a professional nursing career. The program will also provide a strong foundation for a graduate education in nursing.
Major areas of emphasis include family nursing, community health, leadership, and research. Graduates are prepared to provide primary health care in diverse settings; to provide education to individuals, families, and community groups; and to continue lifelong learning.
Admission Requirements
- Graduation from a state-approved associate degree or diploma nursing program
- Current RN license (submitted to Undergraduate Admissions)
- Overall 2.0 GPA with no grade below a "C" in nursing support (upper and lower division) and lower-division nursing courses
Diploma graduates and those from non-HLC accredited nursing programs must successfully complete the NACE nursing proficiency tests scoring 60% or higher prior to admission. Student is responsible for paying for the NACE exams and for paying to have the credits transcribed to their official transcript. Credit for lower-division nursing content will be awarded to those who successfully complete the tests and the first semester of the nursing program.
Concurrent RN to BSN
Students who are enrolled in an associated degree nursing program AND have successfully completed their first semester of nursing courses AND have met all general education requirements may enroll in the nursing program.
NURS 3003: Professional Nursing Role

Professional Nursing Role explores essential attributes and competencies of the professional nursing role that are requisite to address current and future challenges to nursing and healthcare. Prerequisite: admission to nursing major or permission of instructor.
NURS 3053: Health Assessment
Duration: 7 Weeks

Health Assessment focuses on holistic health assessment of patients using Gordon's functional health patterns as an organizing framework. Current issues in professional nursing practice related to nursing process are included. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 or concurrent, or permission of instructor.
NURS 3103: TRANSCULTURAL NURSING

Students learn about developing the ability to provide culturally competent care to individuals, families and groups from diverse backgrounds. This course provides opportunities to increase cultural awareness and decrease health disparities. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.
NURS 3223: Person & Family Centered Nursing Care
Duration: 7 Weeks

Students learn about promoting person-centered quality care across the lifespan. The focus of nursing care is on the holistic health promotion of the individual while in the family context. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.
NURS 4003: Current Trends and Issues in Nursing

Current Trends and Issues in Nursing focuses on contemporary nursing issues in today's changing healthcare field. Emphasis is on legal and ethical considerations, changes in health care delivery systems and the responsibilities of the nurse. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 or concurrent, or permission of instructor.
NURS 4133: Fundamentals of Nursing Research
Duration: 7 Weeks

Students will learn about similarities and differences of quantitative and qualitative studies as well as statistical methods utilized in nursing research. Legal and ethical issues, theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and literature reviews are examined. Emphasis is on the nurse as a consumer of nursing research. Prerequisite: Statistics with a minimum grade of C and NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C. Concurrent enrollment is allowed for NURS 3003. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.
NURS 4113: Population Health Nursing
Duration: 7 Weeks

Students learn theory and research relevant to nursing practice and public health practice to promote and preserve the health of populations. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.
NURS 4213: Nursing Leadership and Management
Duration: 7 Weeks

Students learn about leadership and management skills relevant to professional practice. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.
NURS 4953: Professional Nursing Synthesis
Duration: 7 Weeks

Students advance the scholarship of nursing by participating in scholarly inquiry as a team member and applying professional nursing skills and concepts developed throughout the nursing program with an emphasis on evidence-based practice. Group work to be expected. Prerequisite: NURS 3003, NURS 3053, NURS 3103, NURS 3223, NURS 4003, NURS 4133, NURS 4113, and NURS 4213. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or permission of instructor is required.
NURS 4973: Professional Nursing Practice
Duration: 16 weeks

The student will engage in experiential learning that combines professional nursing knowledge and skills. This experience allows direct application of course content in the applied setting under guidance and supervision from faculty and approved preceptors. Probably the 20 hours spent for leadership/management field experience in a clinical setting (this is the same as before in the NURS 4294 course). Prerequisite: NURS 3003, NURS 3053, NURS 3103, NURS 3223, NURS 4003, NURS 4133, NURS 4113, NURS 4213, and NURS 4953. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required. Students must have completed the credentialing process, a preceptor agreement, and have an approved facility contract prior to enrolling in this course.

Traditional Pathway

NURS 5293: Advanced Research & Evidence Based Practice

NURS 5992: Nursing Practice Capstone
Duration: 7 Weeks

Students finalize their thesis or capstone project under faculty supervision. The thesis or capstone project will be presented and defended. Students prepare for dissemination of their work for a broader audience, complete a portfolio, and consider plans for post-graduate studies. Students must re-enroll if the thesis or capstone project is not successfully presented and defended. Course may be repeated twice if additional time is needed. Prerequisite: Complete MSN core courses and 12 hours specialization courses. Concurrent enrollment allowed. Restrictions: Admission into the Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree Program. Completion of 200 hours of practicum, submission of the capstone final draft, and instructor approval. Note: May be repeated for a total of six credit hours.
NURS 5810: Practicum
Duration: 16 Weeks

Students work with a preceptor and a faculty mentor to develop and practice competencies in their selected nursing option. The capstone proposal is completed and section drafts are submitted. Students must re- enroll in the course until 200 practicum hours are completed and the capstone proposal final draft is submitted. May be repeated for up to four credit hours.
