Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

Sociology is the academic discipline focusing on the systematic study of people in interaction with one another and in organized relationships. The emphasis is on understanding how people relate to one another and why they act the way they do. Our program's goal is to help students reach an understanding of sociology and to connect this understanding with the actual social world.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Define, give examples, and demonstrate the relevance of the basic concepts in sociology.
2. Understand the role of theory in sociology and be able to compare, contrast, and apply basic theoretical orientations in a topic area.
3. Develop familiarity with sociological research methods involving gathering data, designing a research study, and critically assessing published research.
4. Understand the interdependence between the major societal institutions and be able to illustrate how changes in one impacts the other institutions as well as impacting individuals within the society.
5. Develop a cross-cultural perspective that promotes an understanding of other societies and of the various racial and ethnic subcultures within our own society.
6. Apply sociological concepts and principles to their own lives, groups, organizations, and society.
7. Prepare for a variety of professions which utilize the skills and knowledge learned in sociology.
8. Prepared for graduate education in social gerontology.
9. Ascertain the the requisite knowledge and skills required for graduate study in sociology.
